A small fishing village, called Blanca Subur, has become an essential tourist destination for those visiting Catalonia. But, as we anticipated, we would fall short if we identified Sitges only as a sun and beach destination. In fact, it was hard to summarize what to see in Sitges in just these 10 essentials. The list could have been longer!
1) What to see in Sitges: discover its Promenade
The Mediterranean Sea is an intrinsic part of Sitges. And any day of the year is perfect for a walk along its Promenade. It’s about 3 kilometers of path that runs parallel to its beautiful urban beaches. And on the other side, the view of a set of Indiano-style houses, interspersed with some of the most beautiful examples of impressionist architecture. Of course, with enticing beach bars scattered along the way, so you can rest and taste the quality of Catalan gastronomy.
2) Cau Ferrat Museum: a temple of modernism
If there is an art style associated with Catalonia, it is Modernism. Well, Sitges is considered the cradle of this unique artistic movement. There is a real route you can take in this city and its surroundings to appreciate the richness of this architecture. But if you don’t want to spend so much time, at least visit the Cau Ferrat Museum, the workshop house of artist Santiago Rusiñol that has been converted into a museum. And it contains not only true jewels of modernism; there are also works by Picasso or El Greco.
3) Casa Bacardí: a museum and cocktail workshop
What’s the relationship between Ron Bacardí and Sitges? We hope to have surprised you with this plan, as it turns out that the founder of this famous rum brand was a native of this town. The Bacardí family made their fortune with the marketing of this liquor, and you can learn all about their fascinating story in the modernist building of the Mercat Vell, a museum located in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The Street of Sin or the Street of the First of May are two good examples of places to enjoy the good atmosphere and the tapas bars characteristic of Sitges.
6) Terramar Gardens, the green touch of the city
In this case, our focus is on one of the green lungs of Sitges. Because Sitges is not just a two-color palette. To the white of its houses and the blue of its beaches, we must add the intense green of the Terramar Gardens park. Located between les Anquines beach and the golf course, this open space is filled with native plant species. And if you go in summer, with the added pleasure of enjoying outdoor concerts and other cultural activities programmed each year.
